Biography

Adri Denbroeder (she/her) is a PhD student in East Asian history. She focuses on environmental history in late imperial and modern China, with interests in marginal landscapes like wetlands, marshes, swamps, and the historical actors who encounter them. She is primarily interested in riverine landscapes, and the land stewardship practices that alter them. She hopes to expand her scope toward histories of environmentalism and environmental thought. Originally from San Francisco, she received her B.A in Economic and Social History from Barnard College in New York, and her M.A. in History from The City College of New York (CUNY). Before joining Northwestern, she worked as a police misconduct investigator in New York City.
