Game On: Professor Fitz’s History of Sports Course
Last February, students in Caitlin Fitz’s class on global women’s sports history recreated a game of mid-twentieth century “girls’ rules” basketball: no contact! Only one dribble! No crossing the half-court line! No snatching the ball from your opponent!

Students also sampled historic workout routines from Jack LaLanne to Jazzercise (invented just blocks from Harris Hall by Judi Sheppard Missett ’66). Was the 80s aerobics craze emancipatory for women? Or was it part of a broader backlash against Title IX? Students tested the waters for themselves.
