Undergrads choose to major in history for all kinds of reasons—currently 179 different reasons! Here a few students share their own history and explain how being a history major is a significant part of their lives.

How are you using your History degree? Ashton Dubey (Class of 2016) wrote his senior honors thesis on grassroots conservative opposition to school textbooks in 1960s Texas under the supervision of Professor Keith Woodhouse. After graduation, Ashton worked for the U.S. Department of Justice as a paralegal. He recently accepted an offer of admission from University of Michigan’s School of Law.

The Chabraja Center for Historical Studies continues to flourish under the leadership of Director Sarah Maza and Assistant Director Elzbieta Foeller-Pituch. Every quarter the Center invites high-profile speakers for lunchtime events attended by faculty, students, and members of the Chicagoland community.

A cake advertising Professor Haydon Cherry’s winter 2019 course “Modern Southeast Asia” tempts students to enroll as part of the History Department’s new course advertising event Cakes and Classes! At the inaugural Cakes and Classes in spring 2018, one student was heard to exclaim that the event demonstrated that the History Department was both “fun and cool” – we’ll take it!

The History Department awarded twelve doctorates in 2018. Congratulations to all of our newly-minted History PhDs!
The senior honors thesis is the capstone experience for many History majors. They tell us that it is a challenging and deeply rewarding culmination of their four years of study. We applaud the Class of 2018’s outstanding thesis writers, pictured here with Prof. Kevin Boyle who led the 2017-18 thesis seminar. Congratulations are also in order for our undergraduates who won awards for their historical research and writing in 2017-18!

I write this as the spring birds finally return to Chicago and the pansies and witch hazel remind us that winter may be coming but not before the three lovely seasons each cheer us in their own satisfying ways.
