Africa after 1750 (East, Southern, Central)
The Department of History at Northwestern University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the history of Africa after 1750 whose research focuses on one or more regions within the continent east of Nigeria and south of Egypt. We encourage applications from scholars who work in African languages and who concentrate on the period prior to the First World War or whose research can bridge different time periods.
The successful candidate will teach four courses annually over the course of three academic quarters, advise graduate students, and contribute to a vibrant interdisciplinary community of Africanists both in and beyond the History Department. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in History or an adjacent field by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. This is a full-time position starting September 1, 2024.
